New York is one of the most interesting cities in the world. If you are considering visiting the Big Apple, this post is for you.
Make sure all family members have a machine-readable passport in order. They are the only ones allowed in customs.
Also before traveling, and at least 72 hours before boarding, you must complete the ESTA, Electronic System for Travel Authorization to enter the United States. You can do this on this website.
You may be asked to fill out a customs document during the flight, I-94. If so, you must fill it out and deliver it to customs upon your arrival in the USA.
By the way, get always a return ticket! If not it is possible that customs officers will want to know in depth your reasons to travel to USA. It’s not nice that you get separated from your family when you get to customs and being away for a long time to be questioned. Believe me, it happened to me twice.
With the kids on the plane
New York is a long plane trip if you travel from Europe, so take things with you to entertain your children. Although long-distance flights usually have a screen in each seat to watch movies and play video games. Even so, you’ll need to pull your best repertoire so your kids are entertained during the flight. If they get a good sleep, the better.
With children at the airport
If you travel from outside the United States to New York, you usually arrive at JFK International Airport. It is the largest airport in the world with 7 different terminals, so watch your children all the time.
If you are staying in Manhattan, the best thing to do is to take a taxi (the yellow ones) to your hotel or apartment. They cost between 40 and 50 dollars, depending on the traffic, and the most direct and simple way to get out of the airport without losing your nerves with trains, buses, etc. Beware of private taxis or cars, they are usually black and the cost usually goes up quite a bit.
Accommodation in New York
If you can, the best thing to do is staying in Manhattan. As always, I recommend getting an apartment. At Airbnb you have lots of options. If you take your time, you can find apartments for families with children with all the amenities you need.
About what neighborhoods are best to stay in Manhattan, the Upper West Side area is very residential and interesting, and has several places of interest for children that are a must-visit like the Museum of Natural History or the Children’s Museum . In addition, both Riverside Park and Central Park are in a walking distance.
It is not necessary to stay in the city center, for example Times Square, because communication is excellent on the subway, and the streets are literally full of taxis. Believe me, you will want to move from neighborhood to neighborhood to get to know everything that this city offers.
Things to do with kids in New York
There are a thousand things you can do as a family in New York. Only in Manhattan do you have the Children’s Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Metropolitan Museum (MET) and the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). All are impressive and leaving with you mouth open.
A ferry ride (free) between South Port in Manhattan and Staten Island lets you see the Statue of Liberty without having to queue long.
The roof of the Empire State or Top of the Rock are must see. The views of the city are breathtaking. My recommendation, if you need to pick one of them, is the Top of the Rock. From its rooftop you can seen the Empire State in all its splendor. Try to go on a clear day.
Central Park. As much as you walk, you will not finish discovering this huge park. The zoo is very small but it is super well kept. It is great to spend a morning or an afternoon with the kids having a picnic in the park, playing in countless areas of games, or just eating a real New York hot dog is already something worth living.
In Coney Island there is a boardwalk and a small amusement park and also the famous Nathan’s Hot Dogs, where they perform the hot dog eating competition every year.
It is possible to write a post as long as El Quixote talking about the things they can do in New York. Here are some websites where you can lose yourself in thousands of great activities to do with your children.
Well, I hope that with all these tips your stay in New York with your family is unforgettable. If you have already been there with your children and you can think of more interesting things to do, tell us in the comments!
